In professional development, or in personal development we always hear that “be smart”. Now it’s an obvious question what is smartness, why it is needed, and how we can achieve smartness. Additionally, smartness doesn’t mean skin colour, body structure, deformities, using abusive words, etc. Now we will take a look at this “SMART” from the professional and personal development point of view. As well as we give you examples to understand. To summarise the smartness we have to be in a specific and measurable way which should be achievable in relevant time-bound.
Specific (must be measurable and achievable)
Specific means in every aspect we have to be focused on one target or goal. However, if we have specific agenda then we definitely could fulfil the target. In a specific period as well as
For professional development, we have to make a specific goal. For any project, for any management, for any execution, making a strategy, or creating the vision and vision of a company all should be specific. Additionally, we could have to make specific goal regarding the products and services as well as their separate execution. for example, we should have to execute this project by 26th, we have to generate 2 million leads through the campaign, etc.
In personal development, obviously, we would be focusing on the target or dream. specific means a specific area or function we love or are passionate about and a specific position we have to achieve. like for example, I want to be a director in a couple of years by working in a software development position.
Measurable (specific goals or target)
Measurable means the target or goal we have made could be achievable with the help of everything. Similarly after doing all the hypotheses, and analysis we have to make sure that the target will be completed. Everything means skills, manpower, previous mistakes, upcoming trend, present trend, knowledge, etc. As well as, measure the goal at the beginning.
For professional development, with team discussion, the analysis will help. All the tools and technology selection play an important role. For example, we have to deliver the project through a specific technology. In this case, people, knowledge, manpower, tools, and expertise are the necessary things. If we see that couple of things are missing then we have to think again. A couple of hypotheses, analyses, and internal and external strategies should have to do again.
In personal development, a simple example is if you’re not prepared or don’t have the attitude or are passionate about your life goal then you can’t achieve it in the relevant time period. Your knowledge, skill, and expertise analysis should have to measure. If some things are missing then have to prepare that thing or those things.
Achievable (must be relevant to the time-bound)
The target, the goal we have made should be practical and could be achieved in a fixed time period. Experience and if you don’t have experience then proper and quick analysis will help to understand whether the goal will be achievable or not. Additionally, previous mistakes, others’ mistakes, and thought processes from every angle and aspects help us too.
For professional development, Obviously when we are working individually or as a part of a team several things we have to do. After the proper audit, data analysis, knowledge, and experience we have to decide the goal. The strategy and execution are highly dependent upon achievable goals and targets.
In personal development, the target is highly dependent upon, hard-work, smart work, knowledge, and passion. So, analyze these points and decide whether the goal could be achievable or not. If not then gain these first.
Relevant (specific goal)
Relevant means that the target or goal which we have decided to do should be relevant according to all aspects. Proper analysis and experience with the frameworks will help. Additionally, the goal is made for achieving success. after doing proper analysis of the problem or for the execution of the new thing we have to make goals related to them. The subject and the goal must be proportional.
For professional development, for example, the target is to complete a new project in three months. Now, relevant goal means, we have proper manpower, management, leadership, tools, and technology which helps to achieve that. Relations between internal matters and the goals should be equivalent.
In personal development, passion and the goal should be proportional. The relevant goal means, we have to prepare the goal according to the knowledge, skill, and practices. For example, if I want to become an analyst that means we have to see the requirements. I’ve to prepare stat, math, Excel, SQL, etc. well. Apart from that, I have to look at the processing and growth as well.
Time-bound ( Specific, Measurable, Achievable goal completing time)
Specific, Measurable, and Achievable goals should be Relevant and have Time-bound. Time-bound means approximate time or period. The goal which we made must need time. From first to last how much time we need and have to decide in how many days it will complete. Parkinson’s law will be helpful to understand.
In professional development, At the start of any project, we have to decide the time period. Campaign execution time or duration of the target campaign. At the start, we have to decide these things.
In personal development, Obviously, we have to decide how days we have to complete the target.
SMART means, that smartness is highly dependent upon Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound always plays an important part.
